There’s an important distinction between peanuts and many other types of nuts that, perhaps especially around kids, is important to understand: Peanuts are in the legume family, whereas nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pecans come from trees…so, naturally, are considered to be “tree nuts.”

The cashew is another tree nut—and while the phrase “nut allergy” is an all-encompassing term, it doesn’t delineate that an individual with an allergy might experience a reaction to one type of nut and not another. A peanut allergy and a tree nut allergy are not synonymous.

Scientific research and development company Thermo Fisher Scientific notes that “approximately 20 to 30 percent of those with a peanut allergy are also allergic to one or more types of tree nuts.” That risk for harm is why a grocery chain that’s well known in greater Cleveland and Chicago announced a Tuesday night recall just after 7 p.m. Eastern time via PR Newswire.

The recall is on 143 cases of Heinen’s Honey Roasted Peanuts, for the potential inadvertent inclusion of cashews. The recall came after “one consumer complaint of an allergic reaction” was reported to the company, according to the press release.

Details for the recalled peanuts are as follow—note the recalling firm is Trophy Nut Co., whose site explains they’re an Ohio-based manufacturer of private label and institutional nut products:

  • 8.25-ounce can
  • UPC code: 20601401877
  • Best-by date of 10-01-2025 or 10-03-2025 reportedly stamped on the bottom of the can.

Thermo Fisher Scientific notes that 20% of tree allergy sufferers experience a cashew allergy specifically. Cross-contamination and undeclared allergens are predominant reasons for food recalls this year.

Heinen’s is a 96-year-old Cleveland hometown supermarket chain that, according to a suburban Chicago news outlet, entered Cook County outside Chicago in 2012 and rapidly expanded with more stores in the region since.
